TUSCUMBIA, ALA., May 21.—The commencement exercises of the Tuscumbia public school, of High School, which have been in progress since Sunday were brought to a close this evening at the opera house, where the graduating class composed of Misses Bettie and Wesley Williams, Miss Elizabeth Throckmorton and Mr. John Havis, were presented their diplomas by Prof. J. B. Lockhart of Florence, Ala., who also delivered the annual address to the class. The exercises were begun at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning, at which time Dr. J. O. Molloy, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, Tenn., delivered the commencement sermon.
Monday evening at the opera house twenty of the boy students made declamations for a prize, which was awarded by a committee of three to John Havis, the only male member of the graduating class of 1913, who also received the medal in last year’s contest. Last night the John T. Morgan and Sidney Lanier Literary Societies met in debate, the subject being, “Shall Women Vote.”
The past term has been a very successful year in attendance, grade work and general advancement, and Superintendent J. Floyd Collins will continue to have charge of the school which he has conducted so ably for the past two years.
