Lebanon, IN High School Alumni History and Notes 1877-1925
History of the Alumni Association
The Alumni Association came into being in the late fall of 1906. A large number of enthusiastic alumni had taken part in a high school bazaar that was held for the purpose of making money to buy pictures for the high school, and that night after the day's work was over and the alumni had clear ed a neat sum from their part of the day's enterprise, they met in the assembly hall of the old building and chose officers to carry on the work. There were probably one hundred in attendance at that meeting, and enthusiasm was high. Roy Adney, attorney, was elected president and remained at the head of the organization for two years. Under his leadership the association became an important factor in Lebanon High School life. The work accomlished was such that the community and school authorities felt that it was an organization to be reckoned with.
Mrs. B. F. Coombs was Mr. Adney's successor and it was under her regime that the association reached its highest efficiency. Several home talent plays were given at this time which proved to be a success financially.
Probably the greatest work was the creation of a high school student loan fund for the purpose of helping students financially in their high school course. No interest was charged and no security asked, but the certification by the high school principal of applicant's honesty and worthiness. A number of students were helped in this way and almost all the money loaned was paid back into the treasury. After a service of three years, Mrs. Coombs declined reelection and Helen Means was chosen to take her place. She served one year. The next president was Dr. Otho Darnall, but before he could carry out his plans he left Lebanon. This was in the year of 1912 and with no one taking the lead not much was done.
In a short time the vice-President, Esther Coombs called a meeting of the association and the following officers were elected: President, Lawrence Hopper; vice-President, Roze Moore; secretary and treasurer, Mary Long.
