Santa Maria, TX School Teachers 1930
SANTA MARIA BELLS TO RING
Big Educational Year Is Foreseen by Valley School Board
Santa Maria schools will open Monday, September 1. The superintendent has issued a notice that children who are six year of age on or before September 1 may enter provided they do so during the first two weeks of school. Primary students will have to wait until next year if they do not enter by September 15 unless they have been in some other school. Furthermore, where there is any doubt as to the actual age of any child, a baptismal record or birth certificate may be called for.
The roster of teachers is as follows:
E.G. Vilers, superintendent and high school mathematics; Mrs. J C. Tucker, high school English and Spanish: J C Tucker, commercial subjects and science; Miss Beryl Barger, history; Mrs. G T Washington and Miss Ruby Cobb, 5th, 6th and 7th grades; Miss Winifred Smith, 3rd and 4th grade Mexican; Mrs. E. G. Villers, 3rd and 4th grade American; Miss Gerda Ekrut, 1st and 2nd grade Mexican; Miss Earline Rowe, 1st and 2nd grade American.
Santa Maria high school is now a fully accredited four year high school with 19 units affiliated with the state department of education. Other new units will be asked for this year. All members of the faculty hold standard degrees and the equipment is ample for the size school here.
By recent legislative enactment all students in both grades and high school are required to have regular training in physical education. A regular period has been set aside for this in high school and all teachers will assist. Each grade teacher will handle that work in her own room.
A new school bus, standard in all respects, will start on September 2 and perhaps on September 1 to make two rounds in the morning and pick up all children living at a distance from the school. The bus will take them back again after school in the afternoon. It will be impossible for the bus to call at the door step of each but it will follow the main roads and students can get on at the point nearest their homes.
